My Second Adoption

Because I grew up in a Baptist missionary’s home, I was exposed to the truths of the Gospel at a very early age. My dad was a preacher so I know I heard him (and others) preach the Gospel while I was a boy. Furthermore, my mother, who was also my schoolteacher, would teach me about the narratives of the Bible.

I soon knew I needed to be saved. I was not a bad kid by most standards. I had never killed anyone or cheated with someone’s spouse. But I was a bad kid by God’s holy standard. I knew that I had told lies and had disrespected my parents. I knew that if I did not accept Christ as my Savior, I would be punished in hell after death. One morning, in our living room during our family devotions, I remember asking my mom to show me how to be saved. She took the wordless book and explained to me the plan of salvation. I trusted Christ for salvation that day!

On that day, I was adopted into another family, the family of God. (Galatians 4:4-5) I didn’t earn or work for either of my adoptions. I couldn’t. But just like my first adoption, my Father in heaven reached down and adopted me freely and fully into His family.

This adoption into God’s family is available to anyone who places their trust in Jesus Christ alone to forgive and save them from sin. Religious rituals will not earn you adoption into God’s family. A good character will not earn you adoption. Only by putting your full dependence on Jesus can you be adopted into the family of God.
